Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) is an enhanced x-ray technology used to measure bone density and to track bone loss. DEXA is the established standard for measuring bone mineral density (BMD) and is used to diagnose osteoporosis. DEXA scans are also effective in tracking the effects of treatment and for measuring body composition, such as body fat and muscle mass.
A DEXA scan is quick and painless. Medicare allows a DEXA scan to be done once every two years – currently, the recommended timeframe for bone density screening.
